Former Liverpool attacker Stan Collymore has shared his views on what the Reds’ must do next to progress.

In a column for The Mirror, Collymore claims that Jurgen Klopp has taken Liverpool to a whole new level, but insists that there is still something that the German coach must do next season.

The ex-Red believes that the club need to make a few more signings before the new Premier League season, which includes taking a look at Manchester City for inspiration.

“On the pitch, Klopp needs a midfielder who, like Fernandinho at City, will function at 9.8/10 over a season,” said Collymore.

“And a striker who will challenge Roberto Firmino on a regular basis, as well as a couple more to flesh out the squad.”

OPINION

Arguably, Collymore is right about these two potential signings that need to be made in the summer. However, it could be argued that Divock Origi is already providing competition for Firmino in an attacking sense, especially after his impressive run of Champions League performances this season. Klopp could certainly do with a player like Fernandinho to help defensive security and squad depth ahead of next season, however again it could be argued that the Reds have their own midfield wall in Fabinho, who has also been very, very impressive this past season. If Liverpool are to truly go for a Premier League title challenge next season however, which is obviously the initial aim, then they will have to bring some players in to help with squad depth, and these players do need to be to the same standard as the players who are already at the club to enable a decent level of competition. Some extra attacking competitions for Firmino would be useful however, and would make Klopp’s team selection an interesting watch next season.
