OPINION

Some Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to rave about a report which has suggested Klopp is close to signing PEC Zwolle centre-back Sepp van den Berg. According to The Telegraph, the Reds have beaten Bayern Munich and Ajax to the player’s signature, with journalist Matt Law claiming on his personal Twitter account that the 17-year-old is to undertake a medical on Wednesday. Lots of Reds fans are getting very excited about the report, and they have some reason to do so. Van den Berg made 15 appearances in the Erividisie for Zwolle last season – including 10 starts – and, on average, he made 2.7 clearances per game in the Dutch top flight. And, remember, he’s only 17! However, fans should not get completely carried away and it’s unlikely he’ll slot straight into the Liverpool first-team. While he has done fairly well in his first full season in Zwolle’s first team, not much is known of him and whether he would make a similar impact at Liverpool. Another report [Liverpool Echo], however, indicated that the signing would be a coup for Reds sporting director Michael Edwards, and that shows people are excited about his prospects. At £1.79million, though, he seems like a fantastic gamble to take. There will be obvious comparisons with Matthijs de Ligt, another young Dutch centre-back, and his meteoric rise at just 19 shows that age isn’t necessarily a barrier for a physical centre-back these days.
