When you think of all the Liverpool players who could be sold for big money in future transfer windows, you picture the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

You don’t necessarily think of Marko Grujic, though. The young Serbian has made just 14 appearances for the Reds since becoming Jurgen Klopp’s first signing for the club and spent this season on loan at German side Hertha Berlin.

However, Football Insider reported on Monday that Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards doesn’t want to sell the 23-year-old this summer because he believes he will be worth £40million in the future.

Look, Grujic is obviously a young man who is going to improve in the years to come, and he already made great strides in the Bundesliga this campaign, but Edwards is surely dreaming with his £40million valuation.

It’s difficult to see how as he gets older he’s going to ever be near that amount. He’s a promising young player, but he’s not a top drawer prospect. He’s decent, sure, but if we can’t picture him making an impact at Liverpool now, at the age of 23, then how can we imagine him being worth £40million in the future?

The answer is that we can’t. Having said that, though, if anyone can coax that sort of money out of a buying club it’s Edwards. The amount of cash he’s managed to get from the likes of Bournemouth for Dominic Solanke and Crystal Palace for Mamadou Sakho was tremendous.

But £40million is a whole other level. That’s the sort of money that teams pay for guaranteed top of the line talent, and it’s doubtful that Grujic will ever quite get there.
