Liverpool are expected to take their time and look to tie up smaller pieces of business this summer, according to journalist Jonathan Northcroft.

The Sunday Times correspondent revealed that he expects the Reds to focus on developments such as a new deal for Divock Origi and the possibility of selling Simon Mignolet.

Speaking on the Transfer Window podcast, Northcroft said: “I expect to see Liverpool biding their time, trying to sort out smaller deals, outgoings like Simon Mignolet.

“Tying up Divock Origi on a new contract, which I do expect to happen, and saving their energies for maybe signing a couple of very young players to develop and then trying to pick off those top players at the top end of the market that are gonna take them forward.”

Part of Northcroft’s prediction has already come to the fold, with Liverpool reportedly set to beat Bayern Munich and Ajax to the signing of 17-year-old defender Sepp van den Berg.

Reports also suggested on Tuesday that Liverpool have held concrete discussions with Lille winger Nicolas Pepe, over a potential £71.6million deal for the Ivorian.

OPINION

The tables have quickly turned at Anfield, with many parts Northcroft’s statement looking true. The imminent arrival of van den Berg from PEC Zwolle seems to tick boxes for Jurgen Klopp to develop the Dutch youngster into a future defensive star at Anfield. Let’s be honest, after winning the Champions League, Liverpool don’t need much strengthening, with Klopp having created a side he seems to be content with in previous years. Young additions surely would be smart, as they can watch the senior side and take tips to eventually develop to play in that side. Squad depth is key in the Premier League though, and additions will be needed to compete fully with Manchester City next season. Not much is needed to help Klopp, but better options off the bench will be vital in a bid to continue challenging for silverware. Origi is reportedly set for a new deal, and with Mignolet now expected to stay in Merseyside, the only business now expected is a marquee signing.
