OPINION
Liverpool are reportedly interested in Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy and surprisingly, there are some fans on social media who are thrilled with the prospect of snapping up the one-time England international. According to the Mirror, via their live transfer blog on Sunday morning, the Reds are interested in signing McCarthy, 29, this summer with Simon Mignolet set to leave Merseyside. McCarthy is a good goalkeeper but has lost his place in Southampton’s starting line-up since Ralph Hasenhuttl took charge and Liverpool were linked with the south coast shot-stopper last summer before they snapped up Alisson. McCarthy is proven in the Premier League and would be a good second-choice goalkeeper, certainly an improvement on Mignolet anyway. Links with back-up players don’t usually get fans talking that much on Twitter but in this case, there are plenty of Liverpool supporters who would be more than happy to go shopping at St Mary’s once again.
