Former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres confirmed his retirement from football on Friday morning.

The 35-year-old joined the Reds in 2007 from Atletico Madrid and went on to become one of the best forwards to walk out at Anfield in the club’s history.

The World Cup winner went on to make 142 appearances for Liverpool, with his attributes making him a tough prospect to handle for opposition defences.

The Spanish international possessed great pace and formed an unstoppable partnership with Steven Gerrard during his time with the club. Torres was in the prime of his career in the Premier League and is the Red’s twelveth highest scorer in league history.

Despite being a predator in front of goal who could easily drift into spaces to finish off flowing moves, Torres famously scored plenty of long-range strikes for Liverpool – none more special than the volley against Blackburn.

There is no doubting that the Spaniard will go down as a club legend, and many Liverpool fans reacted to a tweet on their club’s official Twitter account with joy, thanking him for his efforts. One fan said: “The lad had everything. Scored all types of goals. All the best Nando.”
