Liverpool were always going to be on the hunt for a new left back this summer after agreeing to allow Alberto Moreno to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of June.

It appeared that Southampton star Matt Targett had emerged as their primary target earlier this week. 90 MiN reported that the Reds had made contact with the Saints over a potential move for the 23-year-old.

However, that pursuit of the Englishman is surely now up in smoke after the latest developments. The Daily Mail claimed on Wednesday that Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side are ready to sell left back Ryan Bertrand this summer with Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid interested, and will promote Targett to first choice as a result.

If Southampton have made the decision to part ways with Bertrand in favour of Targett then it’s hugely unlikely that they will move the younger man on as well. Indeed, it’s almost impossible that they’d sell both players.

Clearly the 29-year-old is the man the Saints want to move on, leaving Targett as the main man at left back. With that said, there’s next to no chance that he will become the latest player to make the familiar trek from St Mary’s Stadium to Anfield.

It would appear, then, that Jurgen Klopp is back to the drawing board in his search for a left back to back up and provide competition to the world class Andrew Robertson.

It’s going to be hard to find someone to agree to play second fiddle to arguably the finest left back in world football, and it certainly appears that Targett won’t be that man.
