COMMENTARY

Some Liverpool fans acted on behalf of their side’s scouts on Saturday as they tuned into Nigeria’s clash with Burundi in order to cast their eye over attacker Samuel Chukwueze. The Daily Mail previously reported that the Reds had assessed the 20-year-old Nigerian winger ahead of the current transfer window opening as the club only wanted to consider signing players in their early 20s with a good work ethic and reasonable price tag. Given that one Reds fan below watched Chukwueze in action for Nigeria in their 1-0 win in the African Cup of Nations and came to the conclusion that he was the only member of his side that tried, he surely ticks one of those boxes. Chukwueze alongside Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi were Nigeria’s main attacking threats on Saturday as they constantly ran at Burundi’s defence and it’s easy to see why Reds fans were taken with Chukwueze as a result, even though he didn’t get on the scoresheet. The 20-year-old featured 26 times for Villarreal in La Liga in his 2018/19 campaign and racked up five goals as well as two assists in his outings. This resulted in Chukwueze being involved in 14% of his side’s league goals and that’s only made more impressive when you consider he only started 50% of Villarreal’s league games (Source: Transfermarkt).
