Aston Villa are among the clubs that approached Alberto Moreno with an enquiry before he left Liverpool at the end of his contract last month, according to ESPN.

The broadcaster claims that “in recent months”, Barcelona, Sevilla, Real Sociedad, Zenit and Marseille had also been in touch with the 27-year-old left-back, who is now a free agent.

However all of those clubs appear to have missed out on the Spanish defender as it is understood that he is now set to complete a move to Villarreal after his contract at Anfield officially expired.

ESPN adds that Moreno is due to undergo a medical with Villarreal before signing a five-year deal with the La Liga club.

OPINION

Moreno might not have been the best signing for Aston Villa. During his time at Anfield, Moreno proved that he is a much better attacking left-back than he was in his defensive duties and for a team that is coming up from the Championship, they need full-backs who are able to do both and maybe lean towards being more defensive. Moreno has been a good servant for Liverpool. After joining the Reds in 2014 he went on to make 141 appearances in all competitions and played a role in Jurgen Klopp creating the team that we see today. He’s no longer part of that team due to how well Andrew Robertson has played, but Moreno has still played a role. It’s nice to see that he’s already found a new club in Villarreal. He should get plenty of game-time for the Spanish side, who will no doubt be looking to improve on their results last season after they finished in a disappointing 14th place in La Liga.
