Former Rangers midfielder Barry Ferguson believes Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard could become Liverpool manager ‘the moment’ Jurgen Klopp leaves.

The Anfield legend will always be linked with a return to Merseyside as manager, having distinguished himself in a magnificent playing career with the Reds.

Ferguson does believe there’s something he needs to do before getting the job, though: “Let’s be honest, we’ve all known from day one that Steven Gerrard hopes to go back to his own spiritual home at Anfield the way [Frank] Lampard has returned to Stamford Bridge,” he wrote in his column for the Daily Record.

“But I just hope he has to wait an awful lot longer than his old England team-mate. And the good news is if his dream is to manage Liverpool one day first he’s going to have to take Rangers back to the top of Scottish football. If he can do that and win the title he’ll walk straight back to Merseyside the moment Jurgen Klopp decides he has achieved all he can in England.”

OPINION

You would think that Gerrard will have to achieve more in management to get the Liverpool job than Lampard did to secure the Chelsea post. The former Rams chief had just one year in charge at Pride Park before getting the position at Stamford Bridge, but that is a lot to do with the situation at Chelsea these days. The Blues are under a potential transfer ban and therefore cannot sign new players, which means that they’ve been able to take a risk with a young manager like Lampard that they likely wouldn’t have done normally. Liverpool, though, will likely be in tremendous shape when Klopp decides to walk away from the Anfield giants. Therefore, Gerrard will have to have distinguished himself more at Rangers than Lampard had to at Derby. Because of how ginormous the Ibrox outfit are, that means winning the Scottish Premiership at least once. The former England international needs to topple Celtic before he gets the Reds job.
