Liverpool could potentially sign Lyon winger Maxwel Cornet this summer, according to Liverpool Echo journalist Theo Squires.

The Reds reporter feels that the 22-year-old could be a realistic arrival on Merseyside, despite Jurgen Klopp’s team being linked with his teammates Nabil Fekir and Memphis Depay.

Even though talks have been ongoing since the start of this year, the Ivory Coast international has been unable to agree to a new contract with the Ligue 1 giants.

Squires claims Liverpool watched Cornet extensively last season and that he fits into the relatively modest price range in which the club are looking to do business this summer.

OPINION

Fekir is the Lyon player Liverpool have been constantly linked with over the past couple of years, but it very much seems as if that ship has sailed. With the Reds not looking to splash the cash too much this summer, Cornet could come into the picture as a terrific rotational option for Klopp. The youngster had to settle for a bit-part role behind the likes of Fekir, Depay and Moussa Dembele last season, but he still chipped in with twelve goals and twice put Manchester City to the sword in the Champions League group stages – surely a very attractive quality in a potential Liverpool player. Look, he’s not a top quality signing whose going to blow the supporters hair back, but he’s a solid addition who could help the team cope with the European and domestic football juggling act. However, if Klopp wants to give both Divock Origi and Rhian Brewster decent game time behind the team’s regular front three next term, this may be a deal best avoided.
