James Maddison messaged Liverpool attacker Rhian Brewster after he once again got on the scoresheet during a pre-season friendly against Bradford.

The 19-year-old scored in the 41st minute of the Reds’ 3-1 win over Bradford on Sunday, taking his goal tally to three for pre-season as he scored a brace against Tranmere Rovers on Thursday.

After the match, Brewster took to his verified Instagram account to reflect on featuring in the win against Bradford.

“Great to get another run out and A goal, but more importantly happy to Play In such an important game to raise awareness for the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation,” wrote the teenager.

Brewster’s post saw Leicester City’s Maddison send him a one-word message, via his Instagram account, simply saying “bagsman.”

OPINION

If you’re unfamiliar with the term “bagsman”, when used in the context of football, the word is associated with an attacker who scores a lot of goals from in and around the six-yard box. Effectively, it’s the modern-day equivalent of calling a forward a poacher.  Given that Brewster’s goal against Bradford was as a result of him bundling the ball home from a tight angle, it’s no surprise that Maddison opted to dub the teenager a bagsman after his latest display. Brewster’s ability to pounce on chances which he has already demonstrated in pre-season and in his 2017/18 campaign when featuring for the Reds’ U-23s side, he scored six in 15 outings, could prove to be very handy to Jurgen Klopp’s side in the coming campaign. The 19-year-old may never have appeared for the senior side before, but given his natural goalscoring instincts, it’s easy to imagine him getting in goalscoring positions for the first-team in the upcoming season, and seizing his chance to get on the score sheet. Brewster spent 440 days on the sidelines injured due to an ankle injury between January 2018 and March 2019, as per Transfermarket, and is no doubt eager to make his 2019/20 campaign one to remember as a result.
