Liverpool left back Andrew Robertson has lifted the lid on the two players who pulled the squad for a ‘chat’ after their defeat to Napoli on Sunday.

It was a pretty miserable day for the Reds at Murrayfield all things considered, as the Italian side eased to a 2-0 victory in front of the Scottish crowd. Now, Robertson has revealed what happened after the game.

“It wasn’t good enough,” he said, as per the Daily Mail. “We were miles off it. We were outplayed. At times we looked foolish by not pressing as a team. And we need to look at it and improve as our season starts in a week and it doesn’t get any harder than Man City.

“We need to be a hell of a lot better than this. Jordan Henderson and James Milner pulled us in for a huddle on the pitch and what was said cannot be repeated until after 9pm. It’s not crisis meetings, it’s pre-season. But we can’t get into a habit of losing or drawing. We need to step it up massively.”

OPINION

This is a pretty reasoned assessment of things from Robertson. Pre season isn’t the end of the world, in most cases it doesn’t matter at all in terms of what the results are, but we saw last year how a positive pre season can lead to an impressive competitive campaign. Liverpool were absolutely phenomenal last summer, and obviously kept that up for the majority of the season. This time round, though, their pre season results have been absolutely dire. Sunday’s turnover at the hands of Carlo Ancelotti’s side was the nadir, and clearly some of the Reds players are keen to nip this losing stuff in the bud as quickly as possible. Pre season’s not the biggest deal in the world, we all know that, but Henderson and Milner are players who have become used to winning over the past few years. They know what is expected at a club the size of Liverpool, and so they were just making sure that standards are kept high and that this doesn’t get out of control.
