Former Wales international Dean Saunders believes that Liverpool should look to sign Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Christian Eriksen this summer.

The Dane had another stunning season for Mauricio Pochettino’s side last time out, scoring 10 times and registering 17 assists in all competitions, and Saunders believes he’d be an ideal fit for the Reds.

“Someone like Eriksen, someone of that ilk,” he told talkSPORT [22/07; 07:50] when host Alan Brazil asked him who Liverpool should sign. “Like a number 10 type.”

Saunders also had his say on the James Milner contract impasse reported by the Daily Mail on Sunday: “He’s so important in the dressing room, as well, and that’s worth its weight in gold.”

OPINION

Eriksen is certainly the type of player Liverpool should be looking to bring to Anfield this summer, although it’s doubtful as to whether they would be able to sign the Spurs star himself. The Reds midfield is somewhat workmanlike, it’s true. Players like Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum and Milner aren’t the flashiest – although Wijnaldum can certainly produce moments of inspiration – but they get the job done and tend to rely on the front three to score and create goals. However, if you’re looking at where Jurgen Klopp’s team could improve, it’s probably in adding some more creativity to their midfield. That’s where an Eriksen type of player would come in. If they can secure that calibre of operator then this Reds team could be nigh on unbeatable. As for the Milner situation, that’s something the club need to get sorted out as soon as possible. Simply put, the former England international deserves an extension – get it done.
