Liverpool are optimistic that attacker Divock Origi will sign a contract extension with the club, according to ESPN.

The broadcaster claim that the 24-year-old forward returned to Melwood on Monday and signalled his desire to play a further part in helping the Reds win silverware.

ESPN report that talks with Origi over a new contract have been progressing well as he recognises that there will be more opportunities for him to feature in the upcoming campaign due to the packed schedule for the 2019/20 season.

OPINION

This is good news for Liverpool as it sounds like Origi is about to put pen to paper on a contract extension. The 24-year-0ld only has one year left on his current deal and him committing himself would rule out the idea that he can leave Anfield for free in the near future. Origi had a memorable 2018/19 campaign for Liverpool and a new deal is the least he deserves. The forward scored twice in the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona before scoring in the contest’s final against Tottenham to help the Reds lift the cup. However, while Origi was the hero at times for the Reds, he didn’t exactly play a lot of minutes. The 24-year-old played up 366 minutes across the 12 league outings he made in his latest campaign, as per Transfermarkt, and never completed 90 minutes in any of his league outings. Origi will surely be looking to play more for Jurgen Klopp’s side in his upcoming season and if there is optimism that he is about to commit his future, then it seems he has been convinced that opportunities are coming his way.
