COMMENTARY

Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks remarked on his side losing 2-0 to Liverpool in the Champions League final, and his comments weren’t well received by some Liverpool fans on social media. The 23-year-old central midfielder, who played 66 minutes of the Champions League against Jurgen Klopp’s side, shared he didn’t think the Reds should have been awarded a penalty against Spurs. Winks stated, while on talkSPORT, that he was praying for VAR to step in and disallow the penalty Liverpool were awarded for Moussa Sissoko handling the ball in the box, and claimed that while he may sound bias; he didn’t think it was a penalty. Mohamed Salah ended up scoring from the spot-kick to put the Reds’ 1-0 up in the Champions League final before Divock Origi made it 2-0 in the 81st minute. One Liverpool fan responded to Winks’ remarks to call them embarrassing while another supporter was convinced Winks’ couldn’t be serious. When you consider that Spurs’ had the lion share of possession in the final, with 62%, Winks shouldn’t be blaming a penalty decision for his side’s loss, but rather on his teammates failing to break the Reds down.
