OPINION
Dejan Lovren is a bit of a conundrum really. On the one hand, you have a defender who has won a European title with his club and helped his country to a World Cup final. On the other, you have a 29-year-old with a patchy injury record and a reputation for making clangers. Many Liverpool fans will have been pleased, therefore, to hear rumours that he could be on his way out of Anfield, with Football Insider reporting last month that the Croatian was close to agreeing a deal with AC Milan. As of today, however, Sky Sports are claiming that the Reds have no intention of selling him, and it’s fair to say that there are a fair few disappointed supporters on Merseyside. In fairness though, keeping Lovren is a good idea. Nobody is saying that he should be playing week in, week out, but you will struggle to find a better covering defender than him in the division. With Virgil van Dijk alongside him, he doesn’t even need to be at his best most of the time, and his 4.2 clearances and 4.1 aerial duals won per game [Whoscored] show that he still has ability to act as a no-nonsense, lump it and regroup centre back. Keep him on for his experience, but don’t play him every week. Simple.
