OPINION
This time five years ago, if you had told Liverpool fans that their club were linked with Franck Ribery, there would have been parties on the streets of Merseyside. The Frenchman is a mercurial talent, and has consistently been one of the most exciting and dangerous talents in Europe over the past decade and a half. Now, however, at the age of 36, his powers are very much on the wane. Ribery can still cause issues, there’s no doubt about that, and he did manage six goals and three goals in 10 Bundesliga starts last term, but there is a reason that the German champions have elected to let him go. The veteran winger can still be a live wire, but he registered just 0.8 key passes and 1.4 successful dribbles per match last term [Whoscored]. Those kind of stats would have been unimaginable five or six years ago, and so it is perhaps understandable that Jurgen Klopp decided against making a move for the wide man, despite reportedly being tempted, as reported by L’Equipe. Ribery would have been an eye-catching and exciting addition, but the Reds are far better off looking to push on and bring through some of the precocious youth talent they have at their disposal.

Good veteran backup. He’d be content off the bench and he’s still quality.
