Sam Allardyce suggested that he thought Manchester City would win the Premier League title ahead of Liverpool in the coming season.

The former England manager was asked by Alan Brazil to predict who will the Premier League title in the 2019/20 campaign, and he shared he believes it will be a two-horse race between the Reds and Man City.

Allardyce claimed that Man City had a stronger squad than the Reds, depth-wise, and it was all about them being able to not rest on their laurels after winning the league the last two seasons.

The unattached manager than added that Liverpool will be there or thereabouts in regards to the title.

“I can’t see it anymore than a two-horse race, I still think the strongest squad, depth of squad, is with Man City,” said Allardyce on talkSPORT (9:08am, August 7th).

“It just lies with Pep trying to get over-the-line again as there could still be a slipping mentality where they’ve done one, another straight after and to do a third on the trot is a big mental demand for the squad and the manager but if anyone can drive them on it’s Pep.

“Mentally, it’s where they might slip up.

“Yes (what about Liverpool) if they hadn’t lost to Manchester City, they would have gone the whole season with losing, the first time since Arsenal.

“It takes some doing and so they will be there or thereabouts.”

OPINION

Allardyce directly avoids saying Manchester City will win the league, but his comments imply it. However, the former Everton boss clearly believes the upcoming Premier League title race will be a closely contested battle between the Reds and Man City as he thinks Jurgen Klopp’s will be there or thereabouts. Allardyce rightly highlights the impressive 2018/19 league campaign the Reds had, losing only one game, and they’re more than capable of going one step further in their upcoming season. The Reds finished second last season, one point behind Man City, but haven’t added any high-profile names to their squad in the current transfer window. However, that doesn’t mean they won’t be close to Man City especially when you consider Allardyce implies Man City’s squad may struggle to be motivated to go all out for the Premier League title as they’ve won it twice already. This is an understandable view and maybe Man City will get distracted by trying to win the Champions League, a trophy which they haven’t won.
