Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said that the Reds’ fierce Merseyside rivals Everton could join them in the top six this season.

The top six places in the Premier League have been the exclusive habitation of a select group of teams over the past few years, but Klopp believes the Toffees could gatecrash that group.

“I’m not sure exactly, but Everton again looks very, very ambitious,” he told The Football Daily Podcast [02:50]. “[They’re] Bringing in really good players, to be honest.

“However, their business is not finished. They will come close 100% [to challenging for the top six]. It’s a long, long season and things can happen.”

OPINION

There’s no doubt that Everton have strengthened yet again this summer, having finished the second half of the season off very strongly under manager Marco Silva. They were inconsistent for much of the last campaign, but they seemed to get things together towards the end and looked a much better side. This summer they have gone again, bringing in some top talent. Fabian Delph was a terrific signing from Manchester City in central midfield for a pittance, while Jean-Philippe Gbamin has arrived from Bundesliga side Mainz to replace Idrissa Gana Gueye, who was admittedly a big loss to Paris Saint-Germain. But Andre Gomes’ signing on a permanent transfer was a fine bit of business, while their latest swoop for teenage striker Moise Kean was a phenomenal piece of recruitment. So, yes, Everton will run the top six close and, on paper, you can’t say there’s too much difference between them and the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea. So, yes, they could challenge the big boys this term.
