Former Arsenal attacker Andrey Arshavin shared that he hopes the Gunners beat Liverpool on Saturday.

The 38-year-old who famously broke Liverpool hearts by delivering a huge blow to their Premier League titles hopes in 2009 by scoring four goals against them to earn the Gunners a 4-4 draw (Source: The Guardian), claimed he was just hoping Unai Emery’s side would win when asked about Saturday’s match.

“I hope Arsenal will beat Liverpool, that’s what I want now,” said Arshavin on Sky Sports News (9:50am, Wednesday, August 21st).

Arshavin was then asked whether this season would be the one where Jurgen Klopp guides Liverpool to Premier League glory, and his answer implied that he thought they would finish runners-up again.

“You know it was very..I don’t know, it was 96 points or something (97) last year and they were still second,” replied Arshavin.

“This year is going to be similar I guess.”

OPINION

It seems Arshavin believes that given that Liverpool managed to rack up 97 points last season, but still failed to win the league title, then they’re likely to miss out again. Liverpool finished just one point behind eventual champions Manchester City and only lost one game last season. However, it seems Arshavin isn’t convinced that Jurgen Klopp’s side can go one better despite their impressive record last season. Liverpool have got off to a flying start to life in the Premier League this season as after two games their 100% record is still intact after beating both Norwich City and Southampton. Yet it’s worth noting on Saturday, the Reds are coming face to face with Arsenal and the Gunners are the only other side in the division who have maintained their 100% record after beating both Newcastle United and Burnley. This means that Arsenal may not necessarily be an easy game to get all three points from and it means the Gunners are going into Saturday’s match full of confidence. Last season Arsenal only averaged 1.32 points per game away from home, as per footystats, but it seems they may have improved on their travels as they did manage to get all three points when facing Newcastle on the opening day of the season.
