Roberto Firmino has started the new Premier League season “on fire”, according to Jamie Carragher.

The Brazilian has one goal and one assist after his first three games of the new campaign, and helped his side to a 3-1 over Arsenal on Saturday evening.

And Carragher has suggested that the £180,000-a-week forward [Spotrac] is back to his best after being below top form last term.

Speaking on Sky Sports (Saturday August 24th, Sky Sports Premier League, 17.10), he said: “I think Firmino actually wasn’t at his best last year, even though he had a really good season, but he has started this season on fire.”

OPINION

It seems odd to say that Firmino wasn’t at his best last term. The Brazilian enjoyed a fine averaged 2.2 shots per game in the Premier League, as well as 1.4 successful dribbles, as per Whoscored.By no means are those poor stats, and he was still a key player for the Reds as they went all the way to European glory and came perilously close to a Premier League title too. When you compare his early showings this season, however, you can kind of understand where Carragher is coming from. All of a sudden, Firmino is averaging three shots and 3.5 successful dribbles. He has elevated himself beyond his levels of last term, and even though it is early days, you wouldn’t bet against him kicking on and having a stellar campaign. Sometimes he is overshadowed by the wonderful talents of Mo Salah and Sadio Mane, but he has more than enough to step on and be a star in his own right.
