OPINION

To be fair to Liverpool fans, you can’t blame them for getting excited at the slightest thing this summer. Whereas nearly all of their rivals, except for the embargoed Chelsea, have gone and splashed the cash during the transfer window, the Reds have had to make do with two youth signings and a second choice goalkeeper. It hasn’t exactly been a hive activity on Merseyside, but at the very least, it looks as if one of their new additions hit the ground running on Wednesday night. 16-year-old Harvey Elliott, brought in from Fulham, was on the scoresheet for the U21s as they kicked off their EFL Trophy campaign with a 3-2 defeat to Oldham Athletic. The nature of that competition means that a young side getting beat off a senior team from lower down the divisions is nothing to be ashamed of, and for Elliott, who levelled things up at 2-2, there’s not a lot more he could have done to impress anybody watching. By no means was his goal a classic, but the fact that somebody so young scored at all, and on his competitive debut, ensured that this will be remembered fondly as the first step in a long, and hopefully very successful, journey for the youngster at Anfield.
