Liverpool will bank £276,476 from the sale of defender George Johnston, according to Athletic journalist James Pearce.

The reliable journalist revealed during a question and answer session on transfer business that the Reds will bank 300,000 euros (£276,476) and that they have negotiated a 30% sell-on clause into the deal.

“Confirmation from LFC of young defender George Johnston’s permanent move to Feyenoord,” wrote Pearce during Athletic’s Q&A.

“Understand LFC will bank 300,000 Euros and have negotiated a 30% sell-on clause.”

Liverpool confirmed on Wednesday, via their official website, that Johnston had completed a move to Feyenoord.

OPINION

Liverpool appear to have agreed to a respectable deal for Johnston as getting a six-figure fee for a youngster who has never played for the senior side is pretty good business. The 20-year-old centre-back progressed through the Reds academy after joining at the age of nine, and ended up featuring for the club’s U-18s and U-23s. Johnston made a total of 70 appearances across the Reds’ youth teams, scoring nine goals, and you feel if Jurgen Klopp wasn’t considering him for the first-team in the near future, then it makes sense that he moved on permanently. Johnston showed his leadership qualities last season by captaining Liverpool’s U-23s for a large chunk of last season, and it will be interesting to see how he fairs at Feyenoord. The Dutch club clearly have great faith in the 20-year-old, as not only did they invest money into him by purchasing him, but they handed him a contract until 2021 (Source: Transfermarkt). So while it’s never nice to see a youngster leave without making the grade, the Reds have covered themselves against him fulfilling his potential as they will at least profit from Feyenoord selling him for a big fee, by making sure they have a sell-on clause.
