Former Scotland international Don Hutchison has thrown his weight behind Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp’s questioning of the Premier League’s start date.

The German had become concerned about the prospect of rushing his players back from international duty for the new campaign, potentially risking injury or exhaustion in the process.

BBC pundit Hutchison is 100% behind him: “Managers been saying this for years and they are ALL right,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account.

“Liverpool going for 7 trophies this season. That’s a game every 4!!! Days.”

OPINION

Klopp is absolutely right to be concerned about how early the new Premier League season starts and the negative impact it could potentially have on his players. He’s had the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri, Virgil van Dijk, Georginio Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson, Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane all involved in international tournaments this summer after a season which lasted until the first day of June due to the Champions League final. That’s just not normal, and so you can’t blame Klopp for being frustrated at the English season starting earlier than all of the other major European leagues. He’s going to have to be extremely careful with how he manages his squad in the opening few weeks of the new campaign, especially someone like Mane who isn’t even back in training yet. What doesn’t help matters is the fact that the Reds have the Community Shield, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup to add to their already-hectic schedule. Thank goodness for that mid-season break, eh.
