Liverpool have delivered a three word message to former striker Fernando Torres upon his retirement.

The Spaniard played his final game for Sagan Tosu in Japan, ending in a 6-1 thrashing at the hands of Andres Iniesta’s Vissel Kobe.

But the Reds still saw fit to take to Twitter to honour the 35-year-old, who hit 81 goals during his spell at Anfield.

Writing on the club’s official account, they said: “Enjoy your retirement, Torres” before adding to hands held aloft in praise.

OPINION

Torres broke a fair few hearts when he left Liverpool for Chelsea way back in 2011, but he also created an awful lot of great memories at Anfield too. Apart from Luis Suarez, it’s arguable that the Reds haven’t had a more lethal striker since the days of Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen, and there may even be some who argue that he was the best since Ian Rush. Certainly, had he won more trophies or stayed a little longer, he would have gone down in history alongside the greatest legends that the Kop have ever seen. And even if he doesn’t quite reach that height, he will always be looked back on fondly on Merseyside. Who knows what might have been had he decided to stay at Liverpool, rather than jumping ship back in 2011, but certainly, with the benefit of hindsight, it must be a decision that both he and the club regret.
