Simon Mignolet has congratulated Adrian after the Liverpool goalkeeper was the hero of the night in Wednesday’s Super Cup victory against Chelsea in Istanbul.

Adrian replaced Mignolet as Jurgen Klopp’s second-choice goalkeeper in the summer transfer window but has been thrust into the number one almost instantly due to an injury to Alisson Becker.

The former West Ham goalkeeper made a few impressive saves throughout the match, which ended 2-2, and went on to save Tammy Abraham’s decisive spot-kick in the penalty shoot-out.

Adrian posted images on his personal Instagram account after the victory, and ex-Liverpool man Mignolet was among those to message the Spanish shot-stopper.

“Well done mate,” the Club Brugge goalkeeper said.

OPINION

Mignolet must be kicking himself for leaving Liverpool in the summer transfer window. The Belgium international barely played last season as he sat in the shadow of Alisson, but the Brazilian’s injury that he sustained against Norwich last week meant that whoever was number two goalkeeper would have to step up. It would have been Mignolet if he didn’t return to Belgium to join Club Brugge and instead Adrian, who was released by West Ham at the end of last season, was called upon by Klopp to stand in goals for the Super Cup final against Chelsea. It was a decent performance by the Spaniard. Although his distribution is not as good as Alisson’s, it would be fair to say that it was a solid display by the ex-Hammers goalkeeper even before his penalty shoot-out heroics. He did concede a penalty in extra time, but replays suggest that there was barely any – if any at all – contact with Abraham before he went down.
