Gary Neville has taken to Twitter to suggest that this is the first “decent” side Liverpool have had in 30 years.

The Sky Sports pundit was responding to an article in the Telegraph in which colleague Jamie Carragher claimed that Sadio Mane was the best winger the Reds have had in three decades.

Neville then decided to stir things up by going one further, writing on his personal Twitter account: “First decent team for 30 years!”.

OPINION

You hope for his sake that Neville is joking about this one. This might be the best team that Liverpool have had in quite some time, but to go as far as to suggest that this is their “first” good team in three decades is ridiculous. Poor sides don’t win Champions League titles like the Reds did in 2005, or come within a hair’s breadth of a league title like they did in 2014. Neville is very probably being facetious with his comments, but once again he has shown his blatant and unerring bias against Liverpool. There’s no harm in having a bit of loyalty, and it would be weird if he suddenly stopped hating on his lifelong rivals, but at some point he has to be able to put his Class of ’92 hat aside and pick up his impartial pundit hat. Maybe if he did that, he could see that Liverpool have actually had some pretty fantastic teams over the last 30 years.
