James Pearce has admitted that he would be amazed if Liverpool sold Xherdan Shaqiri this summer.

The £80,000-a-week Swiss international [Spotrac] has yet to feature for the Reds in any of their four competitive matches so far this season, but Pearce believes that he will stay put for the time being.

Writing in a Q&A for the Athletic, he said: “I’d be amazed if LFC sold him.

“They aren’t exactly blessed with that much back up for the frontline.

“Klopp said yesterday that Shaqiri is in great shape and will be required soon. With LFC winning and winning well, Shaqiri can hardly have too many complaints about being overlooked so far.”

OPINION

There aren’t many authorities on Liverpool as reliable as Pearce, and if he is of the belief that Shaqiri will stay put then the chances are that he will stay put. The little Swiss has found himself well down the pecking order at Anfield in recent times, but as Pearce says, the Reds aren’t blessed with a lot of depth, and as Divock Origi proved last season, if you are patient and committed, chances will always arise. Last year was an underwhelming one from Shaqiri, who only managed 0.8 key passes and 0.3 successful dribbles per match in the Premier League, as per Whoscored. He will know that he is better than that and that he has more in his locker. If can start to show that Jurgen Klopp on a regular basis, his time will come.
