Image for Richards delivers verdict on Liverpool

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards shared he liked the look of Liverpool when asked who will the Premier League title in the upcoming season.

The 31-year-old, who recently retired due to a persistent knee injury (Source: BBC Sport),  shared he didn’t want to sit on the fence with his Premier League prediction and claimed he saw Jurgen Klopp’s side as being second-favourites for the league title.

Richards claimed Man City were the favourites to win the Premier League in the 2019/20 campaign but did also throw Tottenham’s name in the mix as he stated they were “always banging on the door.”

“I think it’s hard to say, I like the look of Liverpool,” said Richards on Sky Sports News  (5:50am, Friday, August 2nd).

“Spurs are always banging on the door as well, so I think it’s hard to predict but I don’t want to sit on the fence, but in the Premier League there’s so much effort that goes in from the staff and the players and sometimes you need a little bit of luck.

“I think City would be the favourite, close-second Liverpool, but it would be nice y’know, I know how hard the players work, so it would be brilliant if they could do three in a row.

OPINION

Given Richards’ Man City links, it’s no surprise he is ranking Pep Guardiola’s team as the favourites for the Premier League title, nor is it shock that he appears to be rooting for them. The retired right-back played 294 times for Man City during his playing career and spent the early part of his career at the club, so of course, there is an unspoken bond between Richards and Man City. However given that he instantly didn’t predict Man City to win the league and was hesitant to name a winner at first, it shows how highly he rates Liverpool. After all most ex-Man City players will simply name Guardiola’s team as the eventual league winners and say no more. Klopp’s team came close to beating Man City to the league title last season, they finished in second place with 97 points, which was only one point less than what it took to finish first. Liverpool lost only once in the league, they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Man City in January, and it will be interesting to see if they can go one better in the upcoming campaign. This is especially the case when you consider the Reds haven’t heavily invested in improving their squad thus far, so will be mostly relying on last season’s team to repeat their form.
