Former Liverpool midfielder Don Hutchison has admitted that he is saddened by the club’s agreement to sell its Melwood training facility.

The BBC reported on Thursday that the Reds have completed the sale of the training base to an affordable housing provider, with the funds from the sale set to go into player recruitment and the new training site.

The club are planning to move to a new complex in Kirkby ready for the 2020/21 season, with work having started on it in the summer of 2018.

BBC pundit Hutchison, though, is sad to see Melwood go: “Some history at Melwood,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account. “Amazing days going into the place everyday. Sad to see it go.”

OPINION

Melwood is undoubtedly one of the most historical and well-loved training facilities in the country. When you consider some of the players who have walked its hallowed halls, turning from academy players into first team stars, it’s quite extraordinary. We’ve seen the likes of Steve McManaman, Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen, Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard go from youngsters to world class players thanks to the hard work of those at Melwood and the terrific facilities there. Most recently, right back Trent Alexander-Arnold has emerged as theĀ latest home-grown Reds youngster to become truly world class while at the club. None of that could have been possibleĀ without Melwood, and so it will be sad to see the club move on from it. However, this has been in the pipeline for some time now and this certainly shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone. The good thing, as mentioned above, is that the funds from the sale of the facility will go into signings and the new training base.
