Mark Schwarzer laughed when asked whether Adrian could become undroppable for Jurgen Klopp if he shines in Alisson’s absence.

The former West Ham goalkeeper made his debut for the Reds in the 4-1 victory over Norwich City after Alisson went down injured during the match.

Klopp previously confirmed that Liverpool’s first-choice keeper had suffered a “calf” injured as quoted by Sky Sports, and would miss Wednesday’s clash with Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup as a result.

Schwarzer was asked by Tom White on Football Centre whether Adrian will believe that he could become undroppable and if the experienced goalkeeper expects to stay in the team if he seizes his chance.

“Is Adrian thinking right, I play well, don’t make a single mistake, Jurgen Klopp can’t drop me? Is that what it’s like? When a goalkeeper expects to be on the bench and you get your chance?” asked White on Sky Sports News (10:53am, Monday, August 12th).

The Sky Sports pundit  laughed before saying: “No chance, Alisson is number one, clear number one, Adrian is there to do a job as a number two, and he knows that he has to come in, do the best he can, if he plays brilliantly well then that’s fantastic for the side, the club, but the minute Alisson is fit then he’ll come back in.”

OPINION

Schwarzer clearly doesn’t believe Adrian is thinking he could become undroppable, nor does he think the Spanish keeper has any chance of taking the No.1 shirt for himself. The 32-year-old keeper who left West Ham as a free agent at the end of the 2018/19 season, after falling behind Lukasz Fabianski in the pecking order at the London Stadium, has a very tough challenge leapfrogging Alisson in the pecking order and it’s easy to see why Schwarzer couldn’t stop himself laughing at the question. Adrian managed to concede eight goals in five outings for the Hammers last season, with League One’s AFC Wimbledon being responsible for five of those goals, so it doesn’t seem likely he’ll be flawless for the Reds if given a chance in Alisson’s absence anyway. The 32-year-old would have to roll back the years to have any chance of forcing Klopp hands, after all Alisson’s record last season speaks for itself. The Brazilian kept 21 clean sheets in his 38 league appearances, making 76 saves, and picked up the Golden Glove award for his efforts (Source: Premier League). So it makes sense that as soon as Alisson gets a clean bill of health, hopefully soon, Adrian is back on the bench whatever happens.
