Former Premier League striker Noel Whelan has claimed that there is more to Ryan Kent’s situation at Liverpool than ‘meets the eye’.

The 22-year-old has been left in Anfield purgatory this summer after a variety of exits from the club failed to come off, but BBC pundit Whelan believes the winger could still return to former loan club Rangers.

“There’s more to it than meets the eye,” he told Football Insider. “He’s obviously desperate to carry on where he left off last season and join up again with Stevie Gerrard.

“He’s just had the best season of his life, showed he can win games in Scotland and be a hero at a massive club. The Rangers fans love him and are desperate for him to go back, which tells you a lot.

“I think he should re-join Rangers. He’s not going to play for Liverpool as there’s too many brilliant players blocking his path. You can see why he wants to join Rangers, but they’re going to need to agree a price with Liverpool, first.”

OPINION

Perhaps Whelan knows something we don’t know, but this seems like mere speculation, here. The Kent situation is a tricky one, and something that must be immensely frustrating for him. However, the crux of this matter seems to be that Liverpool want to sell Kent permanently and Rangers can’t offer the transfer fee required to make that happen. As Whelan says, the youngster isn’t going to feature regularly for the Reds any time soon because there are so many good players ahead of him in the pecking order. With that said, it’s in his best interest if he moves on. However, football is a business and Liverpool want to cash in on the phenomenal season Kent just enjoyed on loan at Ibrox. But if Rangers can’t come up with the money then it’s doubtless that any other team will be keen enough on the player to do so – particularly given that the English transfer window is already closed.
