OPINION

What a rollercoaster start to his Anfield career Adrian has had. The Liverpool stopper was signed with the express intention of warming the bench every week, but circumstances and injury have dictated that he has been firmly thrust into the limelight way more often than Jurgen Klopp would have liked. After endearing himself to the Kop no end with his penalty heroics against Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup final, the Spaniard came crashing back down to earth with a less than convincing display in the 2-1 win over Southampton last week, with his calamitous clearance costing his side a late goal. And he continued his speculative form with a couple of heart-in-mouth moments in the Reds’ 3-1 win over Arsenal on Saturday evening. As a stopper, the 32-year-old is perfectly fine, but when it comes to decision making or using his feet, the gulf in quality between him and usual first choice Alisson Becker is seismic. Of his average of 8.5 long balls in the Premier League per game this season prior to the clash against the Gunners, Adrian misplaced five, as per Whoscored, and while he may have only misplaced an average of one short pass per match, that kind of mistake can be incredibly costly. The sooner Alisson returns, the sooner Liverpool fans can start sleeping easy at night again.
