OPINION

You have to feel for Jordan Henderson. The Liverpool captain looks as if he leaves everything on the pitch every time he steps over that white line in a red shirt, he has even managed to join an illustrious club of Kop captain’s who have lifted a European trophy, and yet somehow, he still manages to feel the wrath of certain sections of the Anfield faithful every week. And on the basis of the Reds’ opening night 4-1 demolition of Norwich City, that pattern isn’t going to change anytime soon. The skipper put in a fairly unspectacular performance in the engine room for Jurgen Klopp’s men as they strolled to victory, but in some ways, that’s exactly what you want from a player like him. Now in a more advanced number eight role, Henderson is a no-frills, minimum fuss, midfield battler. Sometimes the best thing a player like that can be is borderline invisible. Last season, Henderson registered a pass completion rate of 87.2%, as well as making 1.4 tackles per game in a slightly deeper role for Klopp’s side, as per Whoscored. With stats like that, and with the level of effort he consistently puts in for the Reds, you can’t help feeling that some of the criticism he receives is somewhat unjust.
