Joe Gomez did not have the best of first-halves against Manchester City on Sunday so it is not hard to see why these Liverpool fans have blasted the defender for his performance in the opening 45 minutes. Gomez’s passing wasn’t the best and yes, he did seem as though he was off the pace. However this is the first competitive match of what is going to be a long season and it’s easy to forget that Gomez has not started a competitive since suffering an ankle injury against Burnley in December 2018. He’s had a full pre-season to get back up to full fitness but playing competitively, against a team like Manchester City, was always going to be tough for the young England international. Everyone knows that he can do better and after a couple of weeks of getting back into the swing of things, there will be no doubt that Gomez is Liverpool’s second-best option at centre-back.
