OPINION
This time last year, if you’d asked Liverpool fans their opinion on handing Joel Matip a new contract, many of them would have been entirely ambivalent. The Cameroonian had hardly set Anfield alight since arriving in 2016, and there wasn’t a great deal in his game to suggest that he was ever going to. Football is a strange and fickle game though, and in the absence of the injured Joe Gomez last season, Matip stepped up to the plate and has proceeded to repeatedly and impressively smash things out of the park. His fine form has continued into this season too, with two goals in four games, and an average of two tackles, 2.5 interceptions, and 5.5 clearances per match, as per Whoscored. And so it is understandable that fans are clamouring for him to be handed a new deal. Matip is out of contract at the end of the season, and right now, it would be sheer lunacy to not hand him a new one. There is also an argument that he should be given improved terms based on his current performances. The sooner he is tied down the better for all concerned, and the Reds look like they have a world class defender on their hands.

He's literally been better than virgil since about April. Undoubtedly earned his place and is getting first team football.. Id love him to sign a new contract

#LFC @LFC He’s been World Class for nearly a year now??and as much as I love Gomez and there’s no doubt he’s going to be our No1 CB for the next 10years?? But right now you can’t drop Matip and if Maguire is worth 80m then how have FSG not given him a contract he can’t refuse?????
