Liverpool are plotting a move to sign free-agent goalkeeper Andy Lonergan, according to Football Insider.

The reputable football outlet claim that a deal could be done for the experienced stopper in the coming days, with Lonergan being considered as back-up to the injured Alisson Becker.

Football Insider report that there is a strong possibility that the 35-year-old could make the move to Anfield to prevent any potential goalkeeper crisis that could arise for Jurgen Klopp.

Lonergan made the trip to the United States on the Reds’ pre-season tour and featured against Sevilla as he covered Alisson once again after his international role at the Copa America.

OPINION

Less than 24 hours after Alisson left the field against Norwich City with a calf injury, Klopp is potentially looking to bring in a fresh face for cover. That could suggest that the Brazilian’s injury is potentially more serious than once thought and that Liverpool wants competition for another new signing, Adrian. The keeper position is one of the more pivotal roles in the Reds’ set up and can be responsible for the constant recycling of possession from their deeper position. Once Alisson went off against Norwich, the drop in quality in playing out from the back also suffered as the Spaniard Adrian got used to Liverpool’s fast-paced style. Lonergan would add good experience to the goalkeeper ranks and could be used to help bring through younger options to be in a role to step up in the future to prevent any need to go into the market for a new stopper. Lonergan knows the side from his trip to America with the Reds and would slip nicely straight into Klopp’s plans – with the German most likely playing more safe than sorry.
