Liverpool sent a scout to watch Trabzonspor goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir on Sunday, according to Turkish outlet Dirilis Postasi.

The 23-year-old stopper is said to have put in an impressive performance in a 1-1 draw against second-placed Fenerbahce, with representatives from Anfield watching on.

The 6’3″ star [Transfermarkt] has been linked with a move to Merseyside, with his agent confirming the Reds’ interest in him earlier this year, as reported by Turkish outlet Ajansspor.

OPINION

This looks like a story that isn’t going away anytime soon. Cakir has been linked to Anfield before, but the fact that the Reds have had scouts in attendance watching him would seemingly suggest that the reported interest in him has at least some substance to it. Whether anything comes of it remains to be seen, but given the current scrutiny on Liverpool’s goalkeeping situation, it wouldn’t be a great surprise to see them move for a new option at some point in the near future. Alisson Becker is undisputed number one, and probably will be for some time, but his deputy, Adrian, has endured a mixed start to his career on Merseyside. His howler against Southampton didn’t exactly inspire confidence, and his pass completion rate of just 72.9% has rightly come in for a fair amount of criticism, as per Whoscored. A younger, more long term second choice makes a lot of sense, and Cakir looks to be top of the priority list for that role.
