The Premier League’s all-time record goalscorer Alan Shearer has included three Liverpool players in his Team of the Week.

The Premier League revealed the news on its official Twitter account on Monday, just rewards for a terrific 3-0 victory from Jurgen Klopp’s side over Burnley on Saturday.

Speaking of the German, he was also represented, as Shearer’s top boss from the weekend. The Liverpool trio who made Shearer’s team were right back Trent Alexander-Arnold, centre half Virgil van Dijk and attacker Roberto Firmino.

The Reds representatives were joined in Shearer’s line-up by the likes of Southampton behemoth Jannik Vestergaard, Manchester City double act Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero, and Leicester City’s fox in the box Jamie Vardy.

OPINION

It’s difficult to disagree with Shearer on any of his picks, here, really. Perhaps there was a goalkeeper who outperformed Tottenham Hotspur’s Hugo Lloris, while it wasn’t actually Alexander-Arnold’s finest game – but overall this is a solid team. You certainly have to include the likes of Arsenal’s Matteo Guendouzi, Aguero and Vardy. Out of the Liverpool representatives, it was Firmino who was most impressive on Saturday. Yes, Van Dijk was his usual imperious self at the heart of the Reds defence, but it was the Brazilian who really set the tone for Klopp’s team and helped them to break down a stubborn Burnley side. It’s no accident that he was the man in place to capitalise on Ben Mee’s mistake for Sadio Mane’s goal, nor that he picked the right pass for that strike. Plus, his finish for his own goal was absolutely superb. He took it off Mohamed Salah’s toes and wrapped his foot around it beautifully.
