Former Liverpool midfielder and current Rangers assistant manager Gary McAllister believes that Gers boss Steven Gerrard replacing Jurgen Klopp at Anfield would make sense.

The German has spoken about the Reds legend potentially taking over from him on Merseyside on a number of occasions, and McAllister believes it could happen – once Gerrard has achieved success at Ibrox.

“That’s surprising in some ways,” McAllister told Sky Sports about Klopp touting Gerrard for Liverpool boss. “But then in other ways, when you look at it, it probably makes a wee bit of sense.

“But when that’s going to happen [I don’t know]. Jurgen looks as if he’s going to be there quite a while. I think it’s a huge compliment but I can assure you that Steven is absolutely fully focused here and trying to win something here.”

OPINION

Gerrard has long been seen as Klopp’s natural successor at Anfield, and rightfully so, but that’s entirely contingent upon him performing well in his role in Glasgow. So far he has done pretty well, with excellent European success being the highlight. However, as of yet he has failed to cut the gap on Celtic at the head of Scottish football to any meaningful extent. Neil Lennon’s side are still the standard-bearers north of the border, and that’s what Gerrard needs to rectify if he is to be trusted with the Anfield post in the future. He is the man that most Liverpool fans would probably like to see replace the German, but they will all want Klopp to stay where he is for some time yet. It’s good to have Gerrard there as a contingency plan, a la Frank Lampard at Chelsea, but there’s no need to rush it. As McAllister says, the Reds legend is keen to win something with Rangers before he would even think about returning to Merseyside in the future.
