James Pearce has delivered an update on where Liverpool currently stand on renewing James Milner’s deal with the club.

The veteran midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season, but as of yet there has been no formal update on where talks over an extension are at.

And writing during a Q&A for The Athletic, Pearce suggested that negotiations could be tricky.

He said: “The hope is that it gets sorted in the next few months.

“Milner spoke in pre-season about how he was still waiting for talks to start. He made it clear to the club at the back end of last season that he was keen to stay beyond the summer of 2020.

“It’s a tricky one as he’s a high wage earner having been signed on a free but I really hope they can agree at least a 12-month extension.

“He’s a model pro and what he gives this team extends far beyond his performances on the pitch.”

OPINION

Renewing Milner’s deal at Anfield seems like an absolute no brainer. Not only is he a fantastic performer, but his experience will be invaluable in that Reds dressing room as they look to kick on from last season’s Champions League win to really establish a dynasty of silverware under Jurgen Klopp. Milner still has more to offer than just a ceremonial role, however. His versatility and work ethic are invaluable to the Reds’ efforts, and last year he recorded 2.2 key passes per 90 minutes, as well as 2.2 successful tackles and 2.5 blocks, as per Whoscored. He is a grafter with an eye for a splitting pass, and his willingness to do the dirty work and the jobs that nobody else wants make him a must-keep for Klopp’s side. At 33, he can’t have too many years at the top left, but he is showing no signs of slowing down just yet, and can still be vital for seasons to come.
