Liverpool have been watching Samuel Chukuwueze, but have not registered a formal interest in the winger, according to James Pearce.

The Reds have been named as potential suitors of the 20-year-old, as reported by Goal, and Pearce has confirmed that the club have been keeping tabs on the player.

Writing in a Q&A for The Athletic, he said: “Liverpol have watched him but that’s as far as it’s gone.

“If Chukwueze kicks on and has a great season in La Liga then who knows but certainly nothing lined up.

“Chukwueze’s reps are clearly keen for him to make the move to the Premier League at some stage.”

OPINION

Chukuwueze has the potential to be a fantastic player. He may only be 20, but he is already an important player for Villarreal, and if he continues at the rate that he has started his career, then he could go on to become a world class talent. Last season Chukuwueze averaged 2.2 shots on goal and two successful dribbles per match, as per Whoscored. This year he has started in much the same vein, and has registered 1.7 key passes per game in the opening three matches of the La Liga season. At the moment, he probably doesn’t have quite enough in his locker to his displace any of the Reds’ current front three, but he could be a decent covering option, and if he kicks on this season and begins to accelerate at the rate that he has promised to so far, then there’s no reason why Liverpool wouldn’t look to make their interest a little more concrete.
