Liverpool defender Joe Gomez will “get his chance” against MK Dons on Wednesday night, according to James Pearce.

The 6’2″ ace [Transfermarkt] has found himself playing second fiddle to Joel Matip in Jurgen Klopp’s plans in recent times, but it is understood that he will be given an opportunity to prove himself in the Carabao Cup against the League One side.

Writing in a Q&A for The Athletic, when asked about Matip’s current form, Pearce wrote: “Yeah he’s enjoying a great run of form.

“Gomez will get his chance v MK Dons in midweek.”

OPINION

In some respects, you have to feel a bit sorry for Joe Gomez. Up until the point that he broke his leg against Burnley last December, he looked as if he was nailed on to become Virgil Van Dijk’s long term partner at the heart of Liverpool’s defence. Instead, that injury has disrupted his progress significantly, and has allowed Matip to jump ahead of him in the pecking order at Anfield. In fairness to the Cameroonian, he has been fantastic so far this term, averaging two tackles, two interceptions, and 5.2 clearances per game, as per Whoscored. But that doesn’t mean that Gomez can’t still have a big future on Merseyside, and his averages of 1.4 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, and 3.3 clearances, as per Whoscored, illustrate a player who may be behind Matip at the moment, but who has the potential to challenge him in the near future.
