Former Wales international Robbie Savage has changed his mind on who will win the Premier League, now plumping for Liverpool.

The outspoken player-turned-pundit was once very much a proponent of Manchester City retaining their title, but after their defeat to Norwich City on Saturday, he’s going for the Reds.

“Listen, I made a prediction before the start of the season that Man City would win the league,” he said on BBC Radio 5 Live [15/09; 18:35]. “I’ve changed my mind already.

“Five points at this stage, the biggest ever gap after five games, I think Liverpool will win the league.”

OPINION

Clearly, City’s defeat to Norwich and the five point gap at the top of the Premier League table has been enough for Savage to change his mind about who is going to win the Premier League this time round. He’s right that it’s a big gap, and it certainly is significant, but we can’t be writing anyone out or changing our minds at this stage of the season. City were way behind Liverpool in January last season, but they still came back and won the title. So it’s absurd, really, for some people to feel this campaign’s title race is a done deal after only five games. To be fair, Savage isn’t ruling City out, but he is admitting that he’s changed his mind already. There’s probably plenty of people who have done the same thing after the two team’s contrasting results on Saturday. It’s obviously not taken much for Savage to change his convictions, but things are certainly looking good for the Reds at this early stage of the season.
