World Cup winner Andre Schuerrle has taken to Instagram to congratulate Liverpool starlet Harvey Elliott in his senior debut for the Reds.

The 16-year-old played in the 2-0 win over MK Dons on Wednesday evening, and shared a photo to his personal account afterwards with the caption: “What a night! Fantastic win and a great team performance at a difficult place to go.

“An incredibly proud moment for me and my family to have made my debut for the club I’ve always supported!

“Thanks to all of the Reds for your support.”

Replying to that post, German international Schuerrle simply put four applauding emojis followed by a rocket.

OPINION

It says something when you’re catching the attention of World Cup winners on your senior debut, and in fairness to Elliott, he looked bright and lovely throughout his bow for the Reds on Wednesday evening. As well as hitting the woodwork twice, he also recorded two progressive runs and nine touches in the opposition box, as per Wyscout. In comparison, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, the established England international who started on the other wing, made one progressive run and had just the two touches in the opposition box, as per Wyscout. It may have been against League One opposition, but to look as assured and creative as Elliott did on his senior debut in no mean feat, and he deserves the praise he’s receiving today.
