Phil Thompson heaped praise on Liverpool attacker Harry Wilson after re-watching his goal for Bournemouth in the 3-1 loss to Manchester City last weekend.

The Sky Sports pundit analysed the 21-year-old’s goal, which came from a direct free-kick, for Bournemouth last weekend and pointed out how Wilson had scored goals just like it on multiple occasions.

Thompson then pointed out that he thought Wilson had “wonderful” technique and just generally gushed about his goal against Man City.

“Absolutely sensational and we have seen do it before in other games, different types of striking the ball, this one (v Man City) is a little bit different,” said Thompson on Soccer Saturday (Sky Sports News, 13:37, Saturday, August 31st).

“He hits it the side of the wall that they like to, Ederson has made an effort for it, that is stunning.

“He has done it so often, his technique is wonderful.”

OPINION

Wilson’s goal against Man City was worthy of any highlight reel, yet he needs to do more than just be a threat from free-kicks. The 21-year-old is on loan at Bournemouth for the season and Jurgen Klopp clearly is hoping that the 21-year-old is able to raise his game to be good enough to feature for the Reds in the near future. However, it hasn’t been all plain sailing for the winger at the Cherries thus far. Wilson played only 63 minutes of Bournemouth’s 3-1 defeat to Leicester City on Saturday and averaged a low rating of 5.93 for his latest performance (Source: WhoScored). The 21-year-old managed to only have one shot on goal, which missed the target, made just the one key pass and failed to complete any dribbles against the Foxes. Wilson was also notably dispossessed once on Saturday and carelessly lost the ball on three occasions due to a poor first touch (Source: WhoScored). While the player will likely continue to provide moments worthy of a highlight reel this season while with Bournemouth, his overall game needs to improve if he wants to break into Liverpool’s first-team.
