Jamie Carragher raved about Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk after his display in the 3-0 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor.

The former Reds right-back when interviewing the Dutch centre-back after the game told him that he was outstanding against Sean Dyche’s side and claimed that he believes the defender was the Man of the Match on Saturday.

“Listen I thought you were outstanding today,” said Carragher while interviewing Van Dijk after Liverpool’s win over Burnley (19:44, Sky Sports Premier League, Saturday, August 31st).

“I’m not sure but I thought you were Man of the Match today, I’m not sure who has the bottle of bubbly at the moment.”

OPINION

Van Dijk was sensational against Burnley and stopped attackers Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes from having a sniff of an opportunity whenever he could.  The 28-year-old centre-back’s dominant display made you never really worry about the Reds conceding, and he deserves credit for helping Jurgen Klopp’s side rack up their first clean sheet of the season before the international break. While the Reds have been racking up positive result after positive result this season, the fact they hadn’t achieved a clean sheet was starting to become a little bit of a concern. After all, it suggested that attackers had found a way to beat the Reds’ defence as last season sides struggled to score against Klopp’s team. Liverpool racked up 20 clean sheets in 38 league outings last season, with Van Dijk playing a part in all of them, and only a similar record will help the Reds’ comfortably go one step further this season and win the league title.
