Leicester City star James Maddison is a “Liverpool type of player”, according to Noel Whelan.

The playmaker hit a stunning late winner in his side’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham at the weekend, and BBC Yorkshire pundit Whelan believes he could cut it on Merseyside.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “James Maddison is absolutely a Liverpool type of player, I can see him joining [Liverpool]. He can be the new Coutinho.

“He’s similar to him in many ways – great feet, can run with the ball, can see a pass that no-one else can and scores wonder goals.

“He’s still young but already he’s a real gem and his value is going to get higher and higher over the next few years.

“Liverpool will also have money to spend after not buying anyone senior this summer. Jurgen Klopp and the recruitment team have a brilliant record in the transfer market, and Maddison could fit in well.”

OPINION

Whelan is right, Maddison would be a fantastic addition for Liverpool. The midfielder is a real live wire, and has been in superb form for the Foxes so far this term. Not only has he hit a goal and two assists in the Premier League so far this season, but he has also registered 3.3 shots and 3.5 successful dribbles per game too, as per Whoscored. Whelan compares him to Coutinho, and rightly so, because those numbers are actually right up there with the stats that he was posting during his last year at Anfield. The South American registered 3.9 shots and 2.8 successful dribbles in his final season on Merseyside, as per Whoscored, and by the looks of it, Maddison is very quickly approaching that kind of form in his career already.
