Sir Kenny Dalglish has claimed that Steven Gerrard could have been embarrassed by Jurgen Klopp and his comments on who could succeed him as Liverpool manager.

The German recently admitted to FourFourTwo magazine that the Rangers’ boss would be the person he would choose for the job as he knows what it takes to be involved at Anfield.

Speaking to the Sunday Post, Dalglish claimed that although it was said in a positive manner, Gerrard may not have appreciated it in the way he expected.

“The Liverpool manager stated that if he decides to call time on his career at Anfield a couple of years down the line, then Steven Gerrard would be his tip to take over from him,” said the Liverpool legend.

“Perhaps Steven might have been a wee bit embarrassed with Jurgen’s comments, but they would have been said with the best of intentions.”

Klopp has a contract at Anfield that runs until 2021, and it is no secret that the German hasn’t filled the Reds with confidence over his future.

OPINION

Dalglish has claimed that Gerrard would be embarrassed as he still has a job to do at Rangers, and he is absolutely right. The former Reds’ midfielder has to make sure his Rangers’ side are near-perfect in order to give them any chance of challenging Celtic for the Scottish Premier League title this season, and any distractions will not be welcome to that cause. Having said that, even he will know that he is the logical replacement to succeed the German in the next five years given his history at Anfield. To replace Klopp will be one of the hardest jobs in football after he transformed Liverpool into a side that are capable of challenging for every piece of available silverware, and with that comes unwanted pressure. Liverpool and Klopp must be careful not to put too much of that on Gerrard before anything actually happens, and rather than potentially embarrassing Gerrard, they must leave him to himself at the Gers, and allow him to keep sharpening his tools as a manager before any potential move.
